Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has made a dramatic political comeback by winning the country’s presidential election. His rival, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat on Sunday, December 8.
At a press conference held at his residence, Bawumia announced his concession and confirmed that Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) had also secured victory in the parliamentary election. “Let me say that the data from our own internal collation of the election results indicate that former President John Dramani Mahama has won the Presidential election decisively,” Bawumia stated, according to Reuters.
Bawumia noted that the NDC’s parliamentary victory was evident, even as final tallies for some seats remained pending. “Even though we await final collation of a number of seats, I believe ultimately these will not change the outcome,” he added.
By conceding before the official results, Bawumia emphasized the need to maintain Ghana’s reputation for peace and democracy. “It is important that the world investor community continues to believe in the peaceful and democratic character of Ghana,” he said. “The people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility.”
Mahama’s victory marks a significant return to power after his earlier tenure as Ghana’s president. His leadership and the NDC’s control of parliament are expected to shape the country’s political and economic direction in the coming years.
This election underscores Ghana’s status as a beacon of democracy in West Africa, with peaceful transitions of power that reflect the will of the people.
