The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) announced on Tuesday that Frank Spittler, the German coach who has been managing the Amavubi national team for the past year, will not have his contract renewed.
In the official statement, FERWAFA explained that after several discussions with Spittler, it was decided not to extend his contract. The federation also indicated that a new head coach for the national team will be announced soon.
FERWAFA cited disagreements during negotiations as the primary reason for not renewing Spittler’s contract. Notably, Spittler’s demands included appointing local assistant coaches to monitor players and matches within Rwanda while he would only be present during national team games. This implied he would spend minimal time in the country.
Another contentious issue was his request for a salary increase, demanding his monthly pay be doubled to $25,000 from the $12,000 he was reportedly earning.
Additionally, Spittler expressed dissatisfaction with how his contract renewal was handled. He mentioned that as his contract neared its end, no officials approached him for discussions. He speculated that FERWAFA might have been waiting to assess the team’s performance in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers before initiating talks.
Frank Spittler, aged 61, was officially appointed as Amavubi’s head coach on November 1, 2023, during a FERWAFA Executive Committee meeting.
FERWAFA has assured fans that a new coach will soon be selected to lead the national team in its upcoming endeavors.
