Intense shelling from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Monday, January 27, caused extensive destruction in Rubavu town, severely impacting homes, schools, and businesses.
The attack came amid escalating clashes between the M23 armed group and the Congolese army (FARDC) alongside its allies. Stray bullets and bombs from the conflict in Goma, DR Congo, crossed into Rwandan territory, causing destruction and casualties.
The hardest-hit areas included Mbugangari, Petite Barrière, Buhuru, and other parts of Rubavu near Goma. Buildings sustained significant damage, with shattered windows, broken doors, and damaged roofs among the visible effects of the shelling

Alain Mukuralinda, Rwanda’s Deputy Government Spokesperson, reported that the shelling claimed at least five lives and left 35 others injured. Additionally, nine homes were completely destroyed.
“These indiscriminate attacks underscore the ongoing insecurity caused by armed groups operating in eastern DR Congo and the inability of Congolese forces to maintain control over their territory,” Mukuralinda stated.
Fear and uncertainty have gripped local residents, many of whom were forced to flee their homes in search of safety. Schools and businesses in the affected areas remain closed as authorities assess the damage and coordinate emergency responses.
