Clashes between AFC/M23 and FARDC escalate in South Kivu

Must read

Intense fighting has erupted in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) between the AFC/M23 rebel coalition and government forces, with battles raging across multiple territories in the province of South Kivu, despite a recent ceasefire agreement.

Heavy fighting broke out early on April 29 in the territories of Walungu, Kabare, and Kalehe, according to local sources and Radio Okapi reports. The clashes involved the use of heavy weaponry, creating panic among civilians and bringing daily life to a standstill.

In Walungu specifically, the combat focused on the mountainous region of Kaziba Chiefdom. Residents remained indoors in fear as local economic activity was temporarily suspended amid hopes for a lull in the violence.

“The fighting started at 6:00 a.m. and intensified in the mountainous areas of Kaziba including Nindi, Kabembe, Butuzi, Mwerwe, Budali, and Lwashandja,” a resident said. “AFC/M23 fighters were advancing towards Luhwindja.”

AFC/M23 rebels reportedly seized the town of Kaziba on April 27, only to retreat shortly after. However, witnesses say rebel units have since returned, with some forces heading toward Luhwindja, while others appear to be targeting the Minembwe highlands in Fizi territory.

Minembwe is home to fighters from the Twirwaneho armed group, which recently joined the AFC coalition following the death of its leader, General Michel Rukunda. He was killed in a drone strike in February 2025.

These developments come just days after the DRC government and AFC/M23 signed a ceasefire agreement on April 23, facilitated by Qatari mediation, aimed at creating a peaceful environment for continued negotiations. However, the renewed hostilities have cast doubt over the viability of that accord.

The conflict in eastern DRC, driven by complex ethnic tensions, resource control, and regional power struggles, continues to displace civilians and undermine efforts for long-term peace.
