Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has voiced support for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as it faces armed conflict in the eastern city of Goma.
“In light of the concerning developments in the DRC, I extend the solidarity, compassion, and support of the Republic of Chad to the DRC, its people, its government, and its president, my brother Felix Tshisekedi,” he shared on Facebook early Sunday.
He emphasized the need for sub-regional, regional, and international entities to “take action to maintain peace and security” in the DRC, urging respect for the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The United Nations reports that nearly 3,000 people have died and 2,880 others have been injured following the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels’ takeover of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, which the group claims to have controlled since January 26.
