CAF postpones CHAN 2024 tournament over logistical challenges

Must read

The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), initially scheduled to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from February 1 to 28, has been postponed to August, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Tuesday, January 14.

In its statement, CAF cited insufficient readiness by the host nations despite “significant progress” in constructing and upgrading stadiums, training facilities, hotels, hospitals, and other necessary infrastructure to support the tournament, which features players exclusively from domestic leagues.

The decision followed recommendations from CAF’s technical and infrastructure experts, some of whom were stationed in the host countries. The experts advised that additional time was needed to bring facilities up to the standards required for hosting a successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship.

The 2024 CHAN tournament will feature 19 teams. While 17 teams have been confirmed, the remaining two—set to replace Libya and Tunisia, who withdrew—are yet to be announced.

Among the confirmed participants is Senegal, the defending champion, having won the previous edition held in Algeria in 2022.
