Bishop Balthazar Ntivuguruzwa was ordained as the new Bishop of Kabgayi Diocese in a grand ceremony attended by distinguished guests as well as members of the congregation on Saturday, June 17.
Bishop Ntivuguruzwa, who was appointed by the Pope, on May 2, assumed his new role following the retirement of Bishop Smaragde Mbonyintege.
With the guiding quote “Orate In Veritate” meaning “pray in truth,” the new Bishop embarked on his journey, seeking the wisdom of Mother Mary.
The Episcopal ordination was attended by Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente, Cardinal Antoine Kambanda, the Archbishop of Kigali Archdiocese, the Pope’s Envoy in Rwanda, Arnaldo Sanchez, the Secretary General of RPF, Wellars Gasamagera, Chief Justice Faustin Ntezilyayo, Minister of Local Government Jean Claude Musabyimana, Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement Jean Damascène Bizimana, Southern Province Governor Alice Kayitesi, CEO of Rwanda Governance Board Usta Kaitesi, Muhanga district officials, members of the congregation, and stakeholders of the Catholic Church.
During the ordination, Prime Minister Ngirente commended Bishop Mbonyintege for his leadership and acknowledged the government’s recognition of his accomplishments, particularly in the education sector.
Ngirente expressed confidence in Bishop Ntivuguruzwa’s abilities and emphasized the government’s appreciation for the Catholic Church’s partnership in achieving national goals. The Prime Minister also thanked the Catholic Church and other religious organizations for their efforts in promoting peace, resilience, and development.
He acknowledged the church’s support for disaster-affected families and expressed gratitude for their assistance. Ngirente urged citizens to abide by government regulations on proper housing and encouraged the adoption of modern agricultural practices for enhanced food security.
During the Episcopal ordination, Cardinal Antoine Kambanda conveyed his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Bishop Ntivuguruzwa, while also assuring him of unwavering support from the priests across the country’s nine dioceses.
Kambanda emphasized the significance of unity within the church and underscored the importance of working together in fulfilling their shared mission.
In his remarks, the Pope’s Envoy in Rwanda expressed gratitude to Bishop Mbonyintege for his 17 years of service in the diocese. He lauded his contributions and offered words of appreciation on behalf of Pope Francis.
Bishop Sanchez reminded the new Bishop that being a Bishop means being a servant, called to give oneself to others, as exemplified by Jesus.
The Episcopal ordination of Bishop Ntivuguruzwa symbolized a new chapter in the history of the Kabgayi Diocese.
As he assumes his role, Bishop Ntivuguruzwa carries the hopes and aspirations of the congregation, supported by the prayers and encouragement of the Catholic community in Rwanda.
