The government has begun repatriating citizens trafficked to Southeast Asia, with 10 victims already returned from Myanmar and efforts underway to bring home at least five more.
Government Spokesperson Yolande Makolo confirmed the development on Saturday, May 3, following online claims that dozens of Rwandans had been lured to countries like Myanmar and Laos under false pretenses.
“They were deceived by fake agents who promised them lucrative jobs in these countries,” read part of a viral social media post that sparked public concern.
Makolo said the repatriations are being carried out in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), adding, “We are aware of five more who are still there, and we are working to bring them home.”
The government has not disclosed the total number of Rwandan nationals believed to be affected, but the growing reports have prompted a renewed focus on human trafficking and illegal recruitment schemes targeting young Rwandans seeking work abroad.
