The funeral of Pope Francis will take place this Saturday, 26 April, 2025, and his mortal remains will be transferred on Wednesday 23 April from the Basilica of St. Mary Major to St. Peter’s Basilica, where the various faithful will receive the final tributes.
According to the press release of the Office of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations, the liturgy will be presided over by Cardinal Giovani Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals.
The coffin of the Sovereign pontiff will then be transported to St. Peter’s Basilica, then to the Basilica of St. Mary Major where the Pope will be buried.
Pope Francis gave up the soul on Monday, 21 April, 2025, at the age of 88. His pontificate ends after 12 years at the head of the Catholic Church.
The 266th Pope died after several months of suffering as a result of a respiratory disease that distanced him from the priesthood.
