President Paul Kagame has extended his condolences to the Catholic church and Catholics around the world following the passing of Pope Francis on Monday, April 21.
“We are saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a moral voice of compassion, humility, and global solidarity,” President Kagame wrote on X.
The President paid tribute to the late Pontiff, highlighting his significant role in strengthening ties between the Catholic Church and Rwanda.
“His leadership was defined by a sincere acknowledgment of the Church’s past in Rwanda, which paved the way for a renewed and constructive relationship—one built on truth, reconciliation, and a shared dedication to the wellbeing of the Rwandan people,” President Kagame remarked.
Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City.
He had been suffering from a respiratory infection and died 12 years after ascending to the papacy.
