DRCongo: 4 dead and 7 survivors as a result of shipwreck on the Wamba River

Four people from the same family lost their lives in a shipwreck on the evening of Thursday, 17 April, on the Wamba River. She is a mother and her three daughters who were coming back from the field. The incident took place 2 km from the Imbela village (Popokabaka territory) in Kwango province.

The canoe that sat down the crossing hit a broken tank. The cause of the accident would be a severe storm. The number of survivors is increased to seven persons, and material damage has been recorded.

The framework for civil society consultation, which provides information, warns of the permanent danger facing people living along the side of the means of transport of makeshift.

“Eleven people from the field took the risk of crossing the Wamba despite the severe storm. Arriving in the middle of the river, the piroguier lost control. Driving by the current, the canoe overturned by hitting the ferry. The death toll is four: a mother and her three daughters. The provincial management of the Roads Authority is required to repair the ferry that has been out of order for decades. If this baccalaureate were operational, this mother and her children would not have been killed,” said Symphorien Kwengo, Vice-President of the Kwango Civil Society Consultation Framework.

The girls who died with their mothers were 13, 11 and 8 years old, respectively.
