Rwanda drop six places in FIFA rankings after poor world cup qualifiers performance

Must read

Rwanda’s national football team, Amavubi, has dropped six places in the latest FIFA rankings, following a disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The latest FIFA rankings, released on Thursday, April 3, 2025, show Rwanda falling from 124th to 130th place. This decline is attributed to their recent results in international matches.

In March 2025, Rwanda lost 2-0 to Nigeria and drew 1-1 with Lesotho in World Cup qualifiers. Additionally, the team had mixed results in the CHAN 2025 qualifiers, securing a 2-1 win against South Sudan but suffering a 3-2 defeat in the return leg. These results led to an 8.7-point drop in FIFA’s ranking system, causing the team to slide down the global standings.

Rwanda last occupied the 130th position in September 2024.

At the top of the global rankings, Argentina retained the No.1 spot, while Spain moved up to second place, overtaking France.

In Africa, Morocco climbed to 12th in the world and became the continent’s highest-ranked team, surpassing Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, and Côte d’Ivoire.

Myanmar recorded the biggest improvement, jumping seven places to 162nd, while Guinea-Bissau saw the largest drop, slipping to 128th.

The rankings were based on 245 FIFA-recognized matches, with 58 games played at the end of 2024. Vietnam and Thailand played the most matches during this period.
