Rwanda Football Association (FA) President cool on Spittler’s future

Must read

Rwanda Football Association (FA) President Alphonse Munyantwali is taking a measured approach in determining the future of Amavubi head coach Torsten Spittler, whose contract is set to expire in three months.

The German coach, who took over the Amavubi team in November 2023, has overseen an impressive transformation of the national team, yet no steps have been taken to extend his contract thus far. Despite the looming expiration, Munyantwali remains confident that there is still time to discuss Spittler’s future, expressing hope that the coach will remain in charge.

“We shall talk and, possibly, there are chances that he could stay,” Munyantwali told reporters in Abidjan, where he is leading the Amavubi contingent for their World Cup qualifier against Benin.

He added, “I think there is still time; there are three months left on his contract, which is a quarter of his contract duration. We shall hold talks with him soon. The period left is short but has not finished yet. We will discuss with him, evaluate his performance, and decide on the way forward.”

While Spittler has humorously hinted at retirement once his contract ends, Munyantwali noted that no formal communication has been made regarding the coach’s future intentions. “Maybe he said it, but he has not told us anything yet… that he won’t return when his deal expires,” Munyantwali said.

Since taking charge, Spittler has elevated Amavubi’s performance significantly. Under his leadership, Rwanda has played eight matches, winning three, drawing four, and losing just one, while conceding only two goals. The team currently leads Group C in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, ahead of football powerhouses like Nigeria and AFCON 2023 semifinalists South Africa.

With just months remaining on his contract, Spittler’s impact has been undeniable, leaving fans and officials eager to see whether he will continue to guide Amavubi’s promising journey.
