The M23 rebel group has captured the town of Mambasa in Lubero Territory, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), just hours after driving out government forces from Alimbongo.
Residents of Bamate Chiefdom, where Mambasa is located, reported that the town fell to the rebels following intense fighting that began overnight on December 16 and lasted into the morning of December 17. The coalition of government forces was forced to retreat toward Ndoluma.
Confirming the capture, Mwami Sondoli Mukosasenge, the Chief of Bamate, stated, “The rebels arrived in Mambasa. We learned of their presence this morning.”
The takeover has triggered widespread fear among residents in neighboring areas, including Ndoluma, Bikara, and Kitsombiro, who are now fleeing to Butembo, fearing that their villages might also be targeted.
Mwami Mukosasenge, speaking to Actualité, condemned the reported looting of civilians’ property by retreating government forces. He urged the army to prioritize the protection of the local population.
The fall of Mambasa follows the M23’s rapid territorial gains since the Congolese government rejected direct negotiations with the rebel group on December 14, 2024. Over the past few days, M23 has captured several key locations, including Matembe, Alimbongo, and now Mambasa.
Alimbongo held particular strategic importance for the DRC government forces, serving as a critical defensive stronghold against further M23 advances since June 2024. Its capture appears to have weakened the army’s ability to contain the rebels, paving the way for M23’s swift advance.
As the conflict escalates, thousands of civilians continue to face displacement, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
