European Parliament calls for ICC arrest warrant against Lukashenko

Must read

Members of the European Parliament have urged the International Criminal Court in The Hague to consider issuing an arrest warrant for Alexander Lukashenko.

The report, adopted by the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, states that Belarus is responsible for the damage caused to Ukraine and for crimes committed on its territory. Lukashenko’s regime is also condemned for the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children.

The MPs call on the EU institutions and member states to take international measures to ensure the prosecution of Belarusian political and military leaders responsible for crimes against humanity and genocide.

The press service of the European Parliament reports on the call for the International Criminal Court to consider issuing an arrest warrant for Lukashenko, as the court has already issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova.

The report also condemns the ongoing repression and systematic human rights violations committed by Lukashenko’s regime against its own people and calls for the release of some 1,500 political prisoners, including lawyers, trade unionists, journalists and human rights defenders.

It also denounced Belarus’s role as Russia’s accomplice in the aggressive war against Ukraine and called on the EU not to recognize any agreements between Lukashenko’s regime and the Russian Federation. The report is planned to be submitted to the European Parliament for approval in September.
