Rwanda to raise the number of women in its military

Brig. Gen. Ronald RWIVANGA, spokesperson for the Rwandan Army, states that the Rwandan Armed Forces (RDF) plans to raise the number of women in the military from the present 7% to at least 30%, in accordance with national policy and the Republic of Rwanda’s constitution.

Brig. Gen. RWIVANGA stated it again in a dialogue about the rebuilding of the Rwandan Army after Rwanda liberated 29 years ago.

It is a dialogue he conducted with young Rwandans residing in other countries in order to better understand their home country.

He noted that, while the number of women in the Rwandan army has reached 7%, the aim is 30%, and initiatives are taken each year to raise that number.

He emphasized that apart from building professionalism in the defense of the country and its sovereignty, the RDF is involved in solving the problems of the people in general.

The Rwandan army has built and renovated around 80 thousand homes for the needy, 1,700 classroom, more than 500 thousand kilometers of roads, more than 50 model villages, treatment for 600 thousand people, public electricity and water supply, and so on.

Regarding the contribution of the Rwandan Armed Forces to building peace in the world, the Spokesperson of the Rwandan Armed Forces pointed out,Rwanda has deployed above 76,000 troops  to peacekeeping missions since 2004.

The deployments are under two main frameworks, including United Nations missions,and bilateral arrangements with some countries including in Sudan(Darfur),  South Sudan, Central Africa and Mozambique.
