China explains goal of drills off Taiwan

Must read

According to Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, the Chinese military exercises that were started last week near Taiwan should not be interpreted as “retaliation” for the visit that the leader of the island, Tsai Ing-wen, made to the United States.

On Monday, during a daily briefing, Wang was asked about the war games taking place in the Taiwan Strait and how they might be related to Tsai’s trip to Washington. The spokesman called the claim “absurd” when a foreign correspondent suggested that the exercise threatened the self-governing Chinese island. He asserted, as reported by local media, that the “separatist activities” of individuals supporting Taiwan’s independence from Beijing pose the real threat to regional peace.

Taiwanese dissidence conflicts with the ‘one China strategy’ that is generally upheld by the worldwide local area, Wang called attention to. He emphasized that the cause of Taiwanese independence must be resolutely opposed because it is incompatible with peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

The spokesman referred journalists to remarks about the exercise released by the Defense Ministry. The Eastern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army had earlier described the drills as countering “the collusive and provocative acts of the external forces and the ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.” The drill was launched on Saturday, the day after Tsai returned from the US, where she met with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other lawmakers.

During the Chinese Civil War in the 1940s, which the Communists won, Taiwan was the nationalists’ final stronghold. Even though the United States supported the island’s government for decades, it officially recognized the People’s Republic of China in 1979 and established diplomatic ties with it as the only Chinese representative.

China and the United States have been at odds over Taiwan for years. Beijing claims that state visits to the island by US officials and vice versa violate its sovereignty over Taiwan. A significant political eruption was set off the previous summer when then, at that point Speaker of the US Place of Delegates Nancy Pelosi made an authority visit to Taiwan.

By making the public declaration that the US military would defend Taiwan in the event that China attempted to take it by force, US President Joe Biden broke a long tradition of strategic ambiguity. In addition, Washington has increased the amount of weapons it supplies the Taiwanese military, claiming that doing so is necessary to dissuade Beijing.

Chinese approach states quiet unification with Taiwan as its essential objective. But Beijing hasn’t said no to using force to stop Taiwan’s attempt to officially declare independence.
